The Čapek Initiative

Karel Čapek (1890-1938) was a Czech journalist, essayist, and playwright. He is regarded as one of the most influential Czech writers of the 20th century and one of the pioneers of the science fiction genre, utilizing his fantastical worlds to question human nature and morality. Čapek’s defense of democratic values (both in his personal life and work) opposed the rise of fascism and communism in Europe during his time. Although he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature seven times, he never received it due to his politics. Some of Čapek’s most notable works are The Makropulos Affair, The White Disease, The Insect Play, The Mother, and War with the Newts. Yet, he is most known for his play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots), for which Čapek invented the word “robot” (deriving it from the Czech word for forced labor).

A New Adaptation of R.U.R.

During our renovation project, we will be developing, in partnership with the Consul General of the Czech Republic and the Svanda Theater, a new English language adaptation of the play R.U.R., a 1921 classic of Czech theater written by Karel Čapek. This play, which gave the world the word "robot” confronted utopian notions of science and technology, which were as hotly debated in Čapek’s time as they are today. In producing this culturally prescient play, our aim is to stimulate conversation about the rewards and risks of artificial intelligence, the technology of the present that is generating the same kind of anxiety and excitement that Čapek wrote about so brilliantly over 100 years ago.

To learn more about our upcoming adaptation of R.U.R., listen to our Artistic Director Ben Donenberg on the Czechast Podcast.
